I watched this last night and like...Trying again... I watched this last night and liked it in parts. The opening is, as you say, very strong and the noir shooting style that Gilling adopts blends well with the jazzy score.<br />It sags in the middle though, dragging out an essentially thin plot and would have been a much better movie had they shaved off about 15 minutes. Mansfield is passable without ever really being all that convincing, Quayle is as good as one would expect, and Edward Judd is his usual obnoxious self. I bou...I was pleasantly surprised by this as well. I bought it as I'm a Quayle fanatic, but I was impressed by Jayne Mansfield's ability to pull of the character. As you say, she isn't perfect, but not as bad as I expected. The movie wasn't as exploitative of her as I was expecting either, but yeah that dress was dreadful. I was most impressed with Gilling's use of lighting. Quayle actually looks amazing with all that noir lighting, something that I don't think any other directors took advantage of. Quayle often admitted that he wasn't handsome movie star type, but given this lighting he actually looks really interesting and compelling, like a movie star should.
