Also agree with you that the romance is central rather than feeling tagged on as it might do in some war films - and the incident with the cat in particular is sheer brilliance. I am a fan of Gary Cooper, and am pleased to hear you say he is underrated - he tends to give quiet performances, but there's a feeling of a lot simmering underneath.
